BIOGRAPHY
Paul Ekman was born on February 15, 1934 in Washington D.C., from here he moved all around the country. He grew up in Washington D.C. as well as New Jersey, California, and Oregon. He was the first person to ever study human emotions in relation to facial expressions. He went on to have an internship at Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute and received a Ph.D in Clinical Psychology from Adelphia University in 1958. After this, he spent two years as the 1st Lieutenant and Chief Psychologist in Ft. Dix, NJ. He then returned to Langley Porter- University of California, San Francisco's Department of Psychiatry and worked here for 44 years (1960-2004). He began his facial expression and body movement studies with his Master's thesis on this topic in 1955 and his first publication in 1957 (Telling Lies). In the mid-60s Ekman began to focus on facial movement and expression along with human emotion.
After retiring from Langley Porter in 2004 Ekman decided to turn all of his research into information that can be studied and learned by the public. This is when he created the Paul Ekman Group PEG LLC and wrote his book EMOTIONS REVEALED: Understanding Faces and Feelings to Improve Emotional Life.
